SPRING BUZZ – EDERLEZI – Greening Celebration at Fort Monostor

(INT)
Genre: közösségi programok / community programmes

Music, dance, fire, water and light-painting in the forest of the tideland on the Danube riverside

It’s hard to define the content and form in advance, because it will consist of smaller/bigger productions created in the art workshops during the GATHERING, which all be assembled into a series of performances by Gábor Boka, Sándor Silló and Norbert Kovács „Cimbi”.

ON A HOPED-FOR CELEBRATION
We aim to establish a spring celebration with a new atmosphere as revival of an old and forgotten celebration of rebirth or fertility, which originally took place around 1st May. The awakening and blossoming of nature, the celebration of the appearance and consuming of the first edible greens, the custom of ritual first-washing of the girls in rivers and streams – these traditions all have been covered by the atmosphere of May Day parades with wurst and beer and by the reality of family weekends spent with mall shopping.

About performers:

One thing is sure: the planned celebration will be ended by the production of MEDIAWAVE Romany & Hungarian Music Workshop instructed by Miklós Both, which will hopefully contribute to the atmosphere of the GATHERING’s closing ceremony. This will be followed by short introduction of other workshops (music, dance, fine arts, light painting) and by flashing their results. While thinking through this new and - so to speak - experimental celebration, we were impressed by the atmosphere of a waterside gypsy celebration (Ederlezi) presented in Kusturica’s movie “Time of the Gypsies”, because it shows very vividly how the celebration of nature’s blossoming after its long suppression by winter could possibly be. Not only among the gypsies who have preserved this custom for the longest time, but also among other nations living under this climate. It must have been an extraordinary and important celebration: people were relieved from the hardships caused by the exhausted winter stocks and the revival of nature, the greening and all the obtained edible food heartened people to continue life, to grow and to REBIRTH in every year cycle. That’s why the period around the 1st May – which, rarely known by many of us, is the six-month reverse pair of the All Saints’ Day on the 1st of November - was once so relevant. These days the tradition-bound remembering to our lost ones has remained, but it is very likely that humanity’s ability to accumulate products in a greater and greater quantity has shadowed the ritual celebration of REBIRTH or FERTILITY and it has turned into May Day parades with an atmosphere not to be further described here. Mentioning the well-known “Labour Day” already expresses the dimension of such strong malformation.

Therefore, we don’t know what kind of celebration this will be - we can only flash some of its presumable elements according to the archetypes.

For example, the Romany & Hungarian Music Worshop will surely be a highlighted part. (Last year it was like this: videót ide.) Since then, Miklós Both has developed this conception through “Ragyogó Évezred/Shining Millennium” that established the group Palimo. The members of this band will take part in the production, but the old ones will be there as well. In addition to this, we’ll welcome Bulgarian musicians, Andalusian flamenco dancers, Italian fire-blowers and whatnot. However, we shouldn’t forget this year’s highlight of the MEDIAWAVE Folk Workshop presenting the culture of Upper Hungary or the Japanese and Hungarian contemporary dancers.
