Erich (later Eric) Zeisl (1905-59) was a Jewish-Austrian composer who in 1938 had to flee his homeland. First, he went to Paris, then to the United States, where he ended up in Los Angeles. Formerly, he had been on his way to become quite successful, but now he had to eke out a living by composing for the movies and by teaching. The creation of own works often took second place.
After his death at age 53, his moderately modern compositions (Lieder, chamber music, choral works, all influenced by the Romantics) were forgotten. Today Zeisl is getting rediscovered, thanks to conductors like James Conlon, but also because of the activities of his only daughter (who is married to a son of Arnold Schönberg).
ERIC(H) ZEISL - AN UNFINISHED LIFE gives many examples of Zeisl's music and depicts Zeisl's life in Austria and the United States. Last but not least, it deals with Zeisl's personality, his love to his former homeland and his failure (or unwillingness) to adapt to exile in America.

  • WDR (TV Germany): May 21, 2012
  • Golden Prague Music TV Festival 2012, Czech Republic

Herbert KRILL

Herbert Krill was born and raised in Vienna, Austria. He graduated from a "Realgymnasium" and studied directing and producing at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Department of Film and TV ("Vienna Film Academy"). After receiving his diploma, he worked as an assistant director and production manager for ORF Austrian TV and various film production companies. In 1975, he went to the United States, initially to New York.
From 1981 through 2001, he lived in Los Angeles, and reported on Hollywood and Independent Filmmaking in the U.S., primarily for ORF Austrian TV and for the Austrian- German TV program "Apropos Film". In this capacity, he interviewed almost two thousand actors, writers, directors, and other film people. Among them, Austrian immigrants to the U.S., such as Billy Wilder, Fred Zinnemann, Wolfgang Puck, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
He also started directing his own documentary films, mostly about the world of cinema, in the U.S. and elsewhere. During this time, he also wrote for several film magazines in Austria. For several years, he was a regular columnist in the German media magazine "agenda".
Since 2001, he has been working exclusively as a documentary filmmaker, with occasional publications in print. He now divides his time between the San Francisco Bay Area and Vienna.
