Energetic klezmer/gypsy music

The Balcony Players started in May 2009 with giving concerts on their balcony!(thus the name, ‘The Balcony Players’). Since then the Balcony players have played at many stages and festivals in Holland and elsewhere in Europe! In August 2010 they toured around Europe living like traveling Gypsy’s, playing on the streets, in the woods, at clubs and on balcony’s. Here they made the contacts and inspiration starting the world-tour they’re making now. Since August 2011 the Balcony Players are on a year-long musical tour through Europe and Americas in their ‘1983’ Ford-Ambulance. While in Europe, their focus is on the Balkan Countries in order to learn more about the lifestyle and music of the Roma in the most authentic way possible. So far they have played with many gypsy bands around the Balkan. For example:

In September 2011 they had the opportunity to meet the famous Hungarian Roma band ‘Romano Drom’. The two bands did a special performance together at the popular Gӧdӧr Club, in the centre of Budapest!
In October 2011 they visited several Roma villages in Romania to give concerts, connect with the people and play for the Roma children. In Clejani, a tiny little village not far from Bucharest, they met the band ‘Taraf de Haidouks’. They played together and had lessons with these incredible musicians.

In South America, the Balcony’s had the pleasure to play for 10,000 people at the festival S.E.N.S.A.C.I.O.N.A.L! in Belo Horizonte, Brazil as well as continue to travel and play other shows in Brazil in the months of February and March.

After South America, they visited the United States. For one month they toured in New Orleans, playing with the locals and absorbing the culture. Then they spent one month in San Francisco where they had the opportunity to play in the famous jazz club, Yoshi’s, together with bass player Stuart Brotman.
Once they were back in Holland, they played on the International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam. Here they reached the semifinals in the international competition and won the Simcha Prize (the Prize of Joy!).

Now the Balcony Players are working on there next CD, scheduled to be released in the Summer of 2013! The new CD is inspired by the last two years of travels, and will include guest musicians/gypsy musicians whom they have met on their travels from all over the world.

Their first CD, ‘Balcony Go Crazy’, released in October 2010, contains a mix of original compositions and traditional music from the Balkan (Gypsy and Klezmer music) as well as influences from the North-East of Brazil. After completing the all acoustic recording, they found a green way to produce and promote the record, using a CD cover made from completely recycled material! For every hardcopy CD sold, one three is planted in Mozambique (Africa), in collaboration with the Dutch good purpose organization Oxfam Novib.
