The Bar Mitzvah Boys

74 min.

This film is an observational, creative full-length documentary that follows the journey of two individuals as they ‘become men’. The story centers on their preparations to become Bar Mitzvah. Their experiences are vastly different because of the 70 year age difference which separates them. We follow Gyuri, an 83 year old solitary man who finally has a chance to overcome his fears, recover his faith, and regain his trust in people as they support him in his quest to re-establish his religious identity. The innocent 13 year old boy, Shalom, is filled with dreams and hopes and reminds Gyuri of his own lost childhood. While the young boy’s preparations are naturally filled with delightful anticipation and excitement, the old man must first come to terms with his sorrow and grief, while maintaining the tedious daily routine of practicing for his call to the Torah. The young boy has a strong, supportive community behind him; Gyuri is alone and his efforts to learn like a diligent school boy are at once heartbreaking and oddly humorous. As the rabbi and the child involve the old man in the ritual of their everyday lives, Gyuri becomes aware of an alternative universe, a world which could have been his had history not intervened. It is the story of an elderly man and a young boy who, through a shared experience, both learn about human bonding, the interdependence between generations.
